1 year later, Cyndi Lauper urges support for Japan
1 year after disaster, Cyndi Lauper returns to Japan, urging support for devastated areas
By The Associated Press

TOKYO (AP) ' Cyndi Lauper is admired in Japan as a true star who didn't run away last year despite the devastating earthquake and tsunami.

Now, the American singer is back to show the Japanese people that she hasn't forgotten them.

Lauper had arrived in Tokyo on March 11, 2011, just as the massive earthquake and tsunami struck northern Japan. She stayed on to give her concerts as planned, even though radiation fears from the nuclear power plant in Fukushima chased away many other performers and visitors. She said she stayed to console the survivors with her music.

She's now back in the country to perform again. Lauper said Monday that she was urging people to buy things from the disaster-hit areas to help people in the region get back on their feet.
