2 more teens under protection in Pa. basement case; Va. police investigated related '08 death
PHILADELPHIA (AP) ' Philadelphia police have taken two more children into protective custody as they investigate the suspects charged with locking disabled adults in a dank basement as part of a Social Security fraud scheme.
Meanwhile, police in Virginia confirm they investigated the 2008 death of a woman living with the alleged ringleader. A landlord says Linda Ann Weston cleared out of the Norfolk home hours after calling police about the death.
The death certificate says 39-year-old Maxine Lee died of meningitis but also suffered from a wasting disease.
In Philadelphia, police say a malnourished teenage niece living with Weston has burn marks suggesting she was burned with a hot spoon and had pellet gun wounds.
In all, eight juveniles and four young adults linked to the case are in protective custody.
