Police: 2, not 3, killed after NY West Indian Day parade; some residents want it shut down
NEW YORK (AP) ' New York City police say a gunman reported killed in a shootout after the annual West Indian Day parade didn't die.
Police say they had erroneous information the gunman had burst out of a Brooklyn apartment building along the parade route Monday night, was shot and died on a hospital operating table. They said Tuesday he was alive and in critical condition.
Two other people were killed and two police officers assigned to parade duties were injured in the post-parade shootout. Two other shootings took place during the Labor Day parade.
The parade was marred by fatal shootings in 2003 and 2005. Some residents say the city should shut it down. Parade organizers haven't commented.
