Rhode Island woman second Powerball winner in recent months
CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) ' A Rhode Island woman is the second Powerball winner from that state in recent months.
Lottery officials said Tuesday that Kathleen Last of Smithfield had the winning ticket in the March 7 drawing for the $60 million Powerball jackpot. She decided to take her winnings in a $37 million lump sum.
Last did not attend the announcement by lottery officials in Cranston. Edmund Alves, an attorney for her, said Last is a private person who does not welcome the publicity surrounding her big win. He said she is in her 50s with a large family.
The winning ticket was sold at Quickets convenience store in Smithfield.
Rhode Island residents have been on a lucky streak. An 81-year-old Newport woman claimed a $336.4 million Powerball prize from a Feb. 11 drawing.
