4 Calif. construction workers hurt after being buried in wet concrete; 3 in serious condition
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ' Authorities say four construction workers were injured, three seriously, after a barrier encasing wet concrete apparently collapsed, sending the sludge spilling onto the men as they worked at a housing complex.
The concrete was being poured on the roof of the six-story building when it drenched the workers Wednesday morning, burying them in sludge.
Fire Department spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge says the men's co-workers pulled them out. She says two of the men fell about 30 feet after being hit.
All four were taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where three of them were listed in serious condition. Hospital spokeswoman Rachael Kagan says the fourth has been upgraded to good condition and is set to be released.
The accident's cause is still being investigated, but Talmadge says firefighters who responded believed the form into which the concrete was being poured had collapsed.
State workplace safety investigators and city building inspectors are at the scene.
