NH official: Trucker whose rig collided with train in Maine had checkered driving record
NORTH BERWICK, Maine (AP) ' The driver of a tractor-trailer that collided with an Amtrak train in Maine had a checkered driving record that included two citations for unsafe operation of a commercial vehicle.
The New Hampshire Department of Public Safety says Peter Barnum of Farmington, N.H., also had six speeding tickets and one seat belt violation in New Hampshire and Massachusetts from 1992 to 2009. In addition, Maine officials say he was cited twice for speeding.
Public safety spokesman Jim Van Dongen says Barnum had only one accident and no license suspensions. He describes Barnum's driving record as spotty but "not disastrous."
His record over the past two years was clean.
Barnum was killed in the fiery collision Monday in North Berwick. Four passengers, the train engineer and an assistant conductor were injured.
