About 70,000 customers along Eastern Seaboard remain without power a week after Irene
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) ' About 70,000 households and business along the Eastern Seaboard who lost power during Irene remain without it a week after the storm.
The majority were in Connecticut, which had 30,000 outages Sunday, and in Virginia, where nearly 19,000 were without power. About 10,000 outages remained in New York, mostly on Long Island.
More than 9 million customers lost power during the storm. It has been restored in Massachusetts, North Carolina and Pennsylvania. Fewer than 1,000 outages were left in Rhode Island.
Just a handful were still without power in Vermont, where entire towns were isolated by flooding. A utility spokeswoman says the outages remain where washed-out roads make it impossible to get to customers.
In New Jersey, where President Barack Obama toured flood-ravaged Paterson on Sunday, nearly 5,500 were without power. It was expected to be restored Sunday.
