Seven of the eight suspects were arrested Thursday, including three in Ghana. The four arrested in the U.S. ' two in Maryland, one in New York and one in Virginia ' all have ties to Ghana.
Authorities said at a news conference Thursday the ring paid $15,000 to smuggle as much as $250,000 worth of heroin on flights through Dulles International Airport.
U.S. Attorney Neil MacBride said Ghana and west Africa have become a major shipping route for drugs in recent years. MacBride and Drug Enforcement Administration officials say transnational investigations and prosecutions like these have become a priority.
