Feds: 8 charged with smuggling heroin from Ghana through DC-area airport and along East Coast
By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) ' Federal authorities say they have taken down an international drug trafficking ring based in Ghana that used couriers flying through a Washington-area airport to smuggle large amounts of heroin up and down the East Coast.

Seven of the eight suspects were arrested Thursday, including three in Ghana. The four arrested in the U.S. ' two in Maryland, one in New York and one in Virginia ' all have ties to Ghana.

Authorities said at a news conference Thursday the ring paid $15,000 to smuggle as much as $250,000 worth of heroin on flights through Dulles International Airport.

U.S. Attorney Neil MacBride said Ghana and west Africa have become a major shipping route for drugs in recent years. MacBride and Drug Enforcement Administration officials say transnational investigations and prosecutions like these have become a priority.
