AP NewsBreak: Grand jury probes border death
AP NewsBreak: Grand jury investigates 2010 death of Mexican shot by US border officials
By The Associated Press

SAN DIEGO (AP) A federal grand jury is investigating the death of an illegal immigrant from Mexico who died after being shot in San Diego by U.S. border authorities with a stun gun in 2010.

Eugene Iredale, an attorney for the victim's family, told The Associated Press Wednesday that he understands attorneys from the U.S. Justice Department's civil rights division have been presenting evidence to the grand jury.

Another person close to the family of Anastasio Hernandez says two eyewitnesses were called to testify Thursday in San Diego. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because grand jury proceedings are secret.

The convening of the grand jury suggests the federal government may be moving toward criminal charges after more than two years of silence on the politically charged case.
