AP Sources: UAW, Ford, Chrysler far apart in talks
AP Sources: UAW, Ford and Chrysler remain far apart in labor talks; GM closer on wages
By The Associated Press

DETROIT (AP) ' People briefed on the matter say Ford, Chrysler and the United Auto Workers remain far apart in labor talks just a week before the current contract expires.

The people say that the two companies have just started serious talks with the union about pay, which always is the main sticking point. Another person says General Motors has been talking pay for about two weeks and is closer to an agreement.

All three people asked not to be identified because the companies and union have agreed to keep talks private.

The UAW's contracts with the automakers expire at 11:59 p.m. on Sept. 14.

The people say the talks have not been contentious. But the lack of progress raises the possibility that the contracts could be extended beyond the deadline.
