AP source: Obama to delay sending free trade deals to Congress until the fall
By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) ' A person familiar with the situation says President Barack Obama will delay sending final legislation on three key free trade agreements to Congress until after lawmakers return from their August recess.

The person says administration officials were prepared to send the agreements with South Korea, Colombia and Panama to Capitol Hill this week. But they say congressional leaders from both parties asked the administration to hold off until September given the all-consuming negotiations taking place on the national debt and deficit.

The White House said Wednesday that it was still in active discussions with Congress over how to proceed with the trade pacts.

The person with knowledge of the situation spoke on the condition of anonymity because the delay has not been formally announced.
