AP sources: US offered Cuba swap of convicted Cuban spy for American prisoner
WASHINGTON (AP) ' U.S. officials say the U.S. government offered to let a convicted Cuban spy return home in exchange for the release of an imprisoned American, but Cuba refused.
The officials say the U.S. also indicated it would be willing to address other Cuban grievances after contractor Alan Gross was released.
Cuba said no, noting that the Cuban, Rene Gonzalez, already had served most of his sentence. It wanted pardons for other Cubans convicted with Gonzalez, but the U.S. refused.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.
Gross was caught in 2009 bringing prohibited communications equipment into Cuba while on a U.S.-financed democracy program. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison. The U.S. says Gross was merely trying to help Cuba's Jewish community.
