APNewsBreak: Mississippi inmates pardoned by former Gov. Barber to be freed Saturday
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) ' Four inmates who were pardoned by former Gov. Haley Barbour are going to be released Saturday after the Mississippi Supreme Court ruled the pardons were legal.
Barbour, a Republican, pardoned 198 people before finishing his second term Jan. 10. Attorney General Jim Hood, a Democrat, challenged of the pardons.
A judge ordered five inmates to remain in prison until the high court could hear the case. The court ruled Thursday the pardons were legal.
One of the five inmates has already been released because he finished his sentence.
Corrections officials say the others will be released Saturday, including a South African man sentenced in 1997 to 35 years for armed carjacking and accessory after the fact to murder.
