Accused leaker Bradley Manning making first public appearance at pretrial military hearing
By The Associated Press

FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) ' The U.S. military is beginning its argument for why Army Pvt. Bradley Manning should be court-martialed.

Manning is the soldier accused of endangering national security by stealing and leaking an enormous trove of government secrets in 2009.

The 23-year-old Manning is making his first public appearance Friday at the opening of his pretrial hearing at Fort Meade, Md. He has been held in detention at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.

Manning is suspected of giving the sensitive documents to the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks. It began publishing the materials.

The pretrial hearing is expected to last through the weekend and possibly beyond. The officer who presides at the hearing will eventually recommend to a two-star Army general whether the case should go to trial.
