Activists hand out 'pink slips' in Manhattan
Coalition of NYC activists hands out 'pink slips' to draw attention to the unemployed
By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) ' Activists holding "pink slips" have scattered across lower Manhattan to call attention to the millions of unemployed.

Organizers had predicted thousands would form a 3-mile line along Broadway on Tuesday. The event lasted 14 minutes ' representing one minute for each million unemployed Americans.

But it was hard to gauge the number of participants who spread out every 20 to 40 feet.

They handed out "pink slips" to passers-by bearing the message: "The next pink slip might have your name on it."

The participating art and labor groups demanded that Congress pass job creation bills and that corporations stop outsourcing jobs.

Emily Reynolds took part in the event. The University of Vermont student says protesters wanted to "create a visual statement on Super Tuesday."
