Obama administration defends decision to prosecute suspected Somali terrorist in civil court
WASHINGTON (AP) ' The Obama administration says its decision to prosecute a suspected Somali terrorist in U.S. civil courts is in the best interest of national security.
The response came in a letter to more than 40 Republican senators who have questioned why the administration would not try the suspected terrorist in a military commission. The attorney general, secretaries of Defense and Homeland Security and director of National Intelligence say the case poses unique legal issues that could be avoided in civil court.
The Somali suspect, Ahmed Abdulkadir Warsame, was captured by the U.S. military in April and questioned by intelligence officials aboard a Navy warship for two months.
