Administration pushes anti-waste effort, savings
Obama administration rolls out anti-waste efforts, promotes taxpayer savings
By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) ' The Obama administration says it is saving taxpayers billions of dollars in improper payments to vendors and contractors, the result of a concerted attempt to reduce errors and instances of fraud in outside expenditures.

The administration will announce Thursday that agencies have already exceeded President Barack Obama's goal, set in 2010, of recovering $2 billion in overpayments to contractors by the end of September. To help in the effort, the Treasury Department is creating an online site to help match various government databases and keep better track of expenditures.

Thursday's announcement comes amid a growing scandal over spending at the General Services Administration, the agency in charge of the federal government's buildings and supplies.
