Administration pitches new rules to simplify home building, energy development on tribal lands
Washington (AP) ' The Obama administration is proposing new rules that it says should make it easier for Native Americans to build homes and develop businesses on tribal lands.
The proposal would set time limits for lease approvals, which Interior Department officials say will help with housing and development of industry, particularly renewable energy projects.
The changes, which would be the first of its kind in 50 years, have been a priority for the National American Indian Housing Council. The plan gives the president a boasting point later this week, when he meets with leaders of the 565 federally recognized tribes at the White House's third Tribal Nations Conference.
