Afghan officials: Suicide bomber kills Kandahar mayor, days after president's brother slain
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ' Afghan officials say a suicide bomber has killed the mayor of Kandahar, just days after the slaying of the president's half brother in this southern Taliban stronghold.
Lawmaker Bismullah Afghan Mal says Mayor Ghulam Haider Hamidi was assassinated Wednesday by a suicide attacker who arrived in the morning at his office in Kandahar. Deputy police chief in Kandahar province Sher Shah Yousafzai confirmed the killing.
The mayor had been mentioned as a person to replace President Hamid Karzai's powerful half brother, gunned down by a close associate July 12 in his heavily fortified home.
Ahmed Wali Karzai's assassination set off a power struggle in Kandahar and raised doubts about stability in a critical area for the U.S.-led war effort.
