Beagle at Kennedy Airport sniffs out contraband food hidden in international luggage
NEW YORK (AP) ' At New York City's Kennedy Airport, a little beagle named Izzy can be found circling the baggage carousels in the international terminal, searching for illegal food stowed in luggage.
She's the first line of defense for federal officials who are trying to protect American agriculture.
About two thousand bags come through Kennedy Airport's Terminal 4 every hours. And each suitcase might contain foods or plants that could wreak havoc on American crops.
With just one sniff, Izzy can determine whether a bag is worth inspecting: Something that would take human inspectors hours to do. During her three years in service, she's found everything from duck tongues to pigs' feet.
Officers send out samples of the food to a lab for analysis and then destroy it.
