Alaska bear mauling victim recounts ordeal
Alaska mauling victim recounts suddenness of attack by bear with cub
By The Associated Press

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) ' A 30-year-old man who was attacked by a bear during an Alaska hike says the enraged animal picked him up with its teeth and shook him hard.

Ben Radakovich says he didn't have time to think about death as the bear pounced.

He had just a split second to yell and raise his hiking poles to look bigger before he was mauled on the Penguin Creek Trail south of Anchorage during a solo hike Sunday.

Radakovich says the bear was with a cub. And he says the animal bit his neck and back, leaving him with wounds that required multiple stitches.

He was rescued almost two hours after he scrambled 30 feet up a tree.

Radakovich was flown to an Anchorage hospital, where he was treated and released that evening.
