Reports: Alleged Pittsburgh mental health clinic shooter was previously committed
PITTSBURGH (AP) ' The man police say opened fire in a Pittsburgh mental health clinic, killing one and wounding six, was previously committed to a psychiatric facility in Oregon following an altercation with police that ended without him being prosecuted.
John Shick had legally changed his name a few months before he was sent to a psychiatric facility following his Dec. 2009 arrest. Court records say Shick was arrested after being spotted behaving strangely at Portland International Airport.
A police report say Shick struggled with officers and kicked one in the head before being subdued.
Multnomah County Deputy District Attorney Robert Leineweber tells the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette a judge ordered Shick to undergo up to 180 days of mental health treatment.
Shick later changed his name back.
The Portland arrest was reported by The Oregonian on Friday.
