Federal lawsuit against American Samoa's government claims age discrimination of workers
PAGO PAGO, American Samoa (AP) ' The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is suing American Samoa, claiming the U.S. territory's government discriminated against older workers.
The EEOC announced Tuesday it is the federal agency's first lawsuit against the government of American Samoa.
The lawsuit claims there was a campaign in the territory to remove older employees from government jobs in order to open up positions for younger workers.
The EEOC alleges the director of human resources executed plans in 2009 to remove older staff by involuntarily reassigning employees who were older than 50 to unfavorable jobs. The agency says this was done to pressure older workers to retire or resign.
