Annan wants delay in UN vote on Syria resolution
Envoy Kofi Annan calls for delay on Wednesday's vote on new UN resolution on Syria
By The Associated Press

UNITED NATIONS (AP) International envoy Kofi Annan has called on the U.N. Security Council to delay Wednesday afternoon's scheduled vote on a new resolution on Syria in a last-minute effort to get Western nations and Russia to reach agreement on its wording.

Council diplomats, speaking on condition of anonymity because discussions have been private, said a delay is virtually certain.

Britain's U.N. Mission tweeted that it is considering Annan's request along with cosponsors of the Western-backed draft resolution that threatens non-military sanctions against President Bashar Assad's government. It is tied to Chapter 7 of the United Nations Charter, which could eventually allow the use of force to end the conflict.

Russia, a close Syria ally, is adamantly opposed to sanctions and any use of force.
