On NH's floating post office, clerk doubles as deck hand, tour guide, ice cream vendor
LACONIA, N.H. (AP) ' The U.S. Postal Service is desperate to save dollars. But it may be getting more than its money's worth from Anne Nix.
Aboard the M/V Sophie C. tour boat on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire, Nix is a mail clerk, deck hand, tour guide and ice cream vendor.
From a closet packed with canvas bags, a scale and other supplies, she runs the nation's only inland floating post office.
Summer mail service to a handful of the lake's islands began in 1892. There's no indication it will end soon despite the Postal Service's intention to close 3,700 offices nationwide.
Like everywhere else, the volume of mail passing through the Sophie C. has dropped. But residents count on the daily deliveries for social interaction and the ice cream treats.
