Anwar says opposition can win next Malaysia polls
AP Exclusive: Malaysia opposition leader Anwar says election victory after rally crackdown
By The Associated Press

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) ' Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim says he believes his three-party alliance can win the next election because its support has risen after a government crackdown on a rally for electoral reforms.

Anwar told The Associated Press the demonstration has stirred political awareness and public anger over allegations of electoral fraud and the government's refusal to allow large street demonstrations.

Police fired tear gas and detained more than 1,600 people for hours July 9 when at least 20,000 Malaysians marched in Kuala Lumpur to demand more transparency in election laws.

Anwar said Wednesday the opposition has "gained new momentum" that could help it defeat Prime Minister Najib Razak's National Front ruling coalition. General elections are widely expected next year.
