Arizona launches site to net cash for border fence
Arizona launches website for donations to build fence along US border with Mexico
By The Associated Press

PHOENIX (AP) ' Arizona has launched a website where people can make donations to pay for fencing along the state's border with Mexico.

The website, buildtheborderfence.com, went into operation early Wednesday. That's the day most new laws the state Legislature passed during its regular session go into effect.

State Sen. Steve Smith, who sponsored the legislation authorizing the fence project, says his initial goal is to raise $50 million.

A committee of legislators, state agency directors and county sheriffs will make recommendations to the Legislature on how and where to spend the money.

Democratic lawmakers say the project is a misguided, piecemeal approach to border security and immigration issues.

Smith and other Republicans argue that the federal government hasn't done enough to secure the border from illegal immigrants, drug smugglers and terrorists.
