Arms dealer known as 'Merchant of Death' dies
Sarkis Soghanalian, nicknamed 'Merchant of Death' for brokering arms deals overseas, dies
By The Associated Press

HIALEAH, Fla. (AP) ' International weapons broker Sarkis Soghanalian, who was nicknamed "The Merchant of Death" for supplying arms to dictators in Nicaragua and Iraq, has died. He was 82.

Soghanalian's son, Garo Soghanalian says his Turkish-born father died of heart failure Wednesday. He was a Lebanese citizen and U.S. resident.

Soghanalian brokered millions of dollars in arms deals to clients including the Christian militia during the Lebanese civil war.

He was sentenced to prison in the early 1990s for conspiring to sell combat helicopters and rocket launchers to Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein during the Iran-Iraq war.

Garo Soghanalian says his father's softer side was often forgotten. He says his father was "magnanimous in his generosity."
