By The Associated Press

TACOMA, Wash. (AP) ' An Army officer from Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state has been charged with felony harassment, accused of threatening to kill his estranged wife and his superior officer.

Pierce County Prosecutor Mark Lindquist said Lt. Col. Robert E. Underwood pleaded not guilty Tuesday to three counts of felony harassment at his Superior Court arraignment in Tacoma.

According to court documents, Underwood and his wife have been going through a divorce. The documents say Underwood's girlfriend says he claimed he had paid a hit man $150,000 to kill his wife and superior officer.

The charges against Underwood were first reported by KIRO TV.

The base located south of Seattle is under scrutiny this week. A soldier from Lewis-McChord has been held in Afghanistan following a massacre that left 16 Afghan civilians dead in two villages.
