Former astronaut Jose Hernandez will run for Congress as Democrat in Calif.'s 10th district
By The Associated Press

MODESTO, Calif. (AP) ' Former astronaut and migrant worker Jose Hernandez has announced plans to run for Congress in California's newly formed 10th district, which includes Stanislaus County and southern San Joaquin County.

The self-described moderate Democrat is a Central Valley native who toiled as a migrant worker as a child then soared over the same fields aboard the International Space Station.

He made the announcement Tuesday in Modesto.

The 41-year-old Hernandez spent a year at NASA headquarters working with members of Congress on space policy issues. That's where the political bug bit him.

Hernandez, who was encouraged to run by President Barack Obama, has never held office. Freshman Republican lawmaker Jeff Denham also is in the race.
