First day back to work in Sept and we're getting great car sales results from August. All major US automakers reported double digit gains starting with the largest GM. Its sales grew 10% to 240,000, thanks to the popularity of the Chevrolet. Ford recovered from a less than encouraging July and saw its sales grew 13% to 197,000. Its new vehicle Ford Escape was the darling of the dealerships. Chrysler similarly had a 14% increase. The new Dodge Dart compact sedan helped Chrysler to close 148,000 sales. Japanese brands Honda and Toyota turned in 60% and 46% increase respectively. Both of them had a low base after the March 2011 Japanese earthquake and tsunami severely disrupted the inventories. Last but not least, German automaker Volkswagen had the best August sales in the US since 1973 with a 62.5% jump to more than 41,000 cars total.
