Auto industry faces at least a three-month slowdown in production of a key material
DETROIT (AP) ' The auto industry faces at least a three-month slowdown in the production of a key component used in fuel and braking systems.
Evonik Industries said Tuesday it will take at least three months ' and possibly more ' to repair a German factory that was damaged in an explosion last month.
The factory makes the chemical CDT, which is an ingredient in the resin PA-12. PA-12 is used in auto fuel lines and brake lines as well as solar cells and sporting goods.
The industry is scrambling to determine how much PA-12 is still available and whether alternatives can be used. On Tuesday, several hundred representatives from automakers and suppliers met in suburban Detroit to discuss the problem and figure out how to begin testing alternatives.
