Initial autopsy inconclusive in death of North Carolina firefighter who ran Chicago Marathon
CHICAGO (AP) ' Initial autopsy results were inconclusive in the death of a North Carolina firefighter who died after collapsing 500 yards from the finish line of the Chicago Marathon.
The Cook County medical examiner's office reported Monday that further tests are needed to help determine why 35-year-old William Caviness died.
The Greensboro, N.C., man was an avid runner who was running in the marathon to raise money for the International Association of Fire Fighters Burn Foundation, which helps burn victims.
Marathon spokeswoman Diane Wagner says his death is "a terrible loss" and the organization will reach out to his family at an appropriate time.
Chicago's weather was warm Sunday. But the marathon's medical director has said fewer marathoners sought medical treatment than in past years.
