Bad blood between New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Democratic Sen. Frank Lautenberg, boils over
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) ' It's become the political equivalent of a no-holds-barred cage match. And it shows no signs of ending.
Republican New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and the state's senior Democratic U.S. senator, Frank Lautenberg, won't stop fighting. They've traded insults over everything from the cancellation of a tunnel project between New Jersey and New York to Christie's plan for a major university consolidation.
This week, a Christie ally challenged Lautenberg at a Washington hearing. A Port Authority of New York and New Jersey executive was questioned about the fairness of bridge and tunnel toll increases. He turned the tables and pointed out how Lautenberg used to get free tolls as a former Port Authority commissioner.
Christie said Friday on New York radio station WOR the hearing made Lautenberg look "selfish and foolish."
