By The Associated Press

DAEGU, South Korea (AP) ' Russia completed a sweep of the walking events at the world championships on Saturday, with Sergey Bakulin winning the 50-kilometer race ahead of teammate Denis Nizhegorodov.

With his main rivals getting disqualified for running or pulling up with cramps or injury, Bakulin bided his time and moved into the lead two-thirds through the race. He controlled the pace from there and finished in 3 hours, 41 minutes, 24 seconds in overcast conditions.

At 24, it was Bakulin's first major victory and proof that Russia's walking program keeps on providing outstanding talent.

Bakulin says "this is very special for me because it is the first time in my career to win something as big as this."

Later Saturday, Usain Bolt will run in the 200-meter final.
