Bangor, Maine: The place where diverted flights go
Accidental tourists: Flights with unruly passengers are routinely diverted to Bangor, Maine
By The Associated Press

BANGOR, Maine (AP) ' Bangor, Maine, is known as the home of horror writer Stephen King. But it is also in the news a lot as a place where trans-Atlantic jetliners are diverted because of terrorist threats and unruly passengers.

That's because the airport is situated in the far northeastern corner of the United States.

The latest such incident happened Tuesday, when a French passenger told a US Airways flight attendant that she had a surgically implanted device. The Paris-to-North Carolina flight touched down in Bangor, and the passenger was removed.

Since 2005, the Bangor airport has handled 21 cases in which aircraft were diverted for security reasons.
