Beanbag round hit Marine veteran during Occupy Oakland demonstration, not tear gas canister
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) ' A Marine Corps veteran whose skull was fractured during an Occupy Oakland protest was hit by a police beanbag round, not a tear gas canister.
Scott Olsen's lawyer told the San Francisco Chronicle on Wednesday (http://bit.ly/wp6b6p ) that Oakland police confirm Olsen was struck by a beanbag fired from less than 30 feet away during an October clash.
It was initially believed Olsen was struck by an errant tear gas can.
Attorney Mark Martel is preparing to file a claim against the Police Department and says the new information puts the incident in a different light. He says beanbag rounds are meant to hit people, meaning the officer intentionally aimed at Olsen's head.
Police refused to comment.
The Police Department and the private Frazier Group are investigating the city's response to the anti-Wall Street protests.
