NYC mayor, a member of 1 percent, grapples with dilemma of Occupy Wall Street encampment
NEW YORK (AP) ' New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is in the uppermost reaches of the world's wealthiest 1 percent.
It would seem that he would be a natural foe for the protesters in their seventh week on Wall Street's footstep, but he has avoided taking action against the encampment protesting economic inequality.
The billionaire mayor has said the situation is the city's responsibility but has yet to explain how his administration might step in.
He says the city can't walk in and simply say, "Hey, you're out of here."
Around the country, some mayors have taken exactly that approach.
In Oakland, Calif., police in riot gear fired tear gas and bean bags to disperse protesters. In Atlanta and in Sacramento, Calif., police have arrested dozens of people to clear encampments.
