Billionaire family offers Mass. campus free to promote legacy of Christian evangelist Moody
NORTHFIELD, Mass. (AP) ' A billionaire family from Oklahoma has turned a no-stoplight town in Massachusetts into a destination for Christian institutions nationwide with an extraordinary promise.
They've pledged to give away a 217-acre campus for free.
The campus, founded by evangelist D.L. Moody, was once home to the Northfield Mount Hermon prep school. But the school consolidated on another campus in 2005 and it's been vacant since.
The Green family, owners of the Hobby Lobby craft store chain, bought the campus in 2009, intending to give it to a new school named after Christian scholar C.S. Lewis. But fundraising was a problem and the Greens decided to give the campus away.
Any new owner must have a vision for offering an education based on traditional Christian principles and enough money to run it.
