Biotech company Amgen laying off about 380 in restructuring of its research & development
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) ' Amgen Inc. is laying off about 380 employees in research and development as it restructures its R&D operations.
The biotech company, based in Thousand Oaks, Calif., says the layoffs are targeted to enable the company to better allocate its research and development resources.
Company spokeswoman Christine Regan says the affected employees were notified Wednesday. They work at several Amgen sites, in both the U.S. and the United Kingdom.
Amgen has a total of about 17,600 employees worldwide, including roughly 6,700 in research and development.
In a statement, Amgen says it has experimental drugs moving into expensive, later-stage patient testing so it has to shift some R&D resources so it can invest in the testing needed to get the drugs approved.
