UK galleries buy 16th Century Titian work, to keep Renaissance masterpiece on public display
LONDON (AP) ' Britain's National Gallery and the National Gallery of Scotland say they've raised 45 million pounds ($72 million) to buy a Renaissance masterpiece that has been in the U.K. for 200 years and keep it on public display.
The galleries said Thursday Titian's "Diana and Callisto" has been saved for the nation with funds from public trusts, private donors and 25 million pounds ($40 million) from the British National Gallery's reserves.
The 16th century painting of a scene from classical mythology has been in Britain since 1798, but is privately owned. The Duke of Sutherland, who owns the painting, offered in 2008 to sell the work to public galleries, sparking a government-backed fundraising campaign.
The two galleries said they would take turns showing the painting in London and Edinburgh.
