CA freeway reopens but police standoff remains
N Calif. freeway reopens but police standoff at nearby hotels extends into Thursday
By The Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ' Authorities say a gunman is still holed inside a northern California hotel early Thursday, but a portion of a freeway that was shut down because of gunfire reopened.

A gunshot Wednesday morning prompting police to briefly stop traffic near the hotel on a section of Interstate 580.

But to guard against any gunfire danger to motorists, the California Highway Patrol says a section of the interstate was closed between U.S. Highway 101 and Sir Francis Drake Boulevard.

The standoff extended into Thursday morning. The gunman is a suspect in a stabbing at a supermarket.

The San Rafael Police Department dispatch office tells The Associated Press that the closed section of interstate was reopened early Thursday.

No details were provided, but KCBS reported that police lowered a large steel plate in front of the suspect's window to prevent any stray gunfire.
