Carmakers: Target distracting handheld devices
Carmakers: Gov't should target handheld as well as built-in devices that distract drivers
By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) ' Automakers are warning that drivers will switch from using distracting devices built into car dashboards to using even more distracting hand-held devices unless the government addresses both issues at the same time.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration heard from automakers at a public hearing on Monday. NHTSA proposed voluntary guidelines last month calling on automakers to include technology in cars that automatically disables built-in phone calling, texting and other distracting devices unless the car is parked.

Carmakers urged NHTSA to speed up work on the guidelines' second phase, due out next year, dealing with technologies that limit drivers' use of hand-held devices while the car is in motion. They said consumers will find another way to use distracting technologies if they can't use built-in devices.
