Officials in Charlotte plan to add up to 3,400 law officers for 2012 Democratic convention
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ' Charlotte officials are planning to buttress the city's sizable police force with as many as 3,400 extra law officers during the 2012 Democratic National Convention.
The additional officers from outside agencies will help the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and the U.S. Secret Service provide security and crowd control for the quadrennial event the week of Sept. 3.
The metro police force has about 1,750 officers of its own.
The extra manpower and other added security for the convention is expected to cost about $50 million. The bill will be paid through a federal grant.
A similar amount is expected to be spent for the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla.
