Chicago's Lyric Opera sets 2015 premiere of 'Bel Canto,' inspired by Peru hostage crisis
CHICAGO (AP) ' The Lyric Opera of Chicago will premiere "Bel Canto" in 2015, based on best-selling author Ann Patchett's novel of the same name inspired by a hostage crisis in Peru.
Lyric Opera creative consultant Renee Fleming will not star. Instead she will act as curator for the piece, which will be by Peruvian composer Jimmy Lopez. Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Nilo Cruz will write the libretto and soprano Danielle di Niese will play the starring role of Roxanne Coss.
Lyric music director Andrew Davis will conduct the opera and Stephen Wadsworth will conduct. It is the seventh world premiere opera at Lyric since 1961. It will be Lopez's first opera.
Lyric announced the project Tuesday. Fleming says she wants to "experience fully being on this side of a project."
