China's September trade growth falls, surplus narrows to $14.5 billion
BEIJING (AP) ' China's government says its trade growth decelerated in September amid weak global demand, and its politically sensitive trade surplus narrowed to $14.5 billion.
The government said Thursday growth in exports slowed to 17.1 percent over a year earlier, down from August's 24.5 percent. Growth in imports fell to 20.9 percent from August's 30.2 percent.
China's exports have been hurt by weak global demand and Europe's debt crisis, while government efforts to cool an overheated economy with curbs on construction and investment have cut demand for imported raw materials and other goods.
