Chinese security tightens as Tibet marks new year; government in exile discourages celebration
JIUHUANG FIRST VILLAGE, China (AP) ' Wednesday marks the Tibetan lunar new year, but as China cracks down on dissent, exiled leaders have called on people not to celebrate.
Heavy policing in China's Tibetan areas is one reason Tibet's exiled government in India called on Tibetans to simply pray for those living under Chinese rule rather than marking the new year more festively.
An overseas Tibet lobbying group said Wednesday that tensions have been building in Tibet's capital, Lhasa, with increased security and officials even making calls at individual Tibetan homes.
The Washington-based International Campaign for Tibet also says hundreds of Tibetans have been detained after returning from India, where they attended teachings last month by the Dalai Lama.
