Clinton calls Russian election unfair, issues new warning to Islamist winners in Egypt vote
VILNIUS, Lithuania (AP) ' U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is criticizing Russia for a parliamentary election she says was rigged. She is also issuing a new warning to the Islamist winners of elections in Egypt to respect human and women's rights and adhere to democratic rules.
Clinton says the gains by Islamist parties in Egyptian parliamentary elections must not set back that country's push toward democracy after the fall of autocrat Hosni Mubarak this year.
On Russia, Clinton says the U.S. has "serious concerns" about the weekend voting in which Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's party won the largest share of parliament seats. Opposition politicians and election monitors say the result was inflated because of ballot-box stuffing and other vote fraud.
Clinton was speaking to a European election-monitoring group in Lithuania.
