Clinton promises $28 million more in famine relief aid to East Africa
By The Associated Press

NEW DELHI (AP) ' Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says the United States will provide an additional $28 million in emergency aid for Somalis affected by famine in the drought-stricken, violence-torn East African country.

In a statement issued Wednesday, Clinton says the U.S. is working with the international community to help more than 11 million people in Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia "who are in dire need of assistance."

The United Nations said Wednesday that tens of thousands of people have died in Somalia from causes related to malnutrition and parts of the country are suffering from famine in the worst drought for over 50 years.

The U.S. has already provided over $431 million in emergency assistance to the eastern Horn of Africa this year, but Clinton says that "is not enough."
