Clinton to expand US relations in Asia-Pacific
Clinton: US to expand engagement in the Asia-Pacific, while continuing to press for reform
By The Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) ' Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is vowing to expand U.S. engagement in the Asia-Pacific by building trade ties and reinforcing its alliances while continuing to press for democratic reforms in authoritarian nations like China and Vietnam.

Clinton addressed a few hundred guests including a dozen Pacific island nation leaders and senior U.S. military officials in Hawaii where she is attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit. President Barack Obama is hosting APEC.

Clinton says it's becoming increasingly clear that, in the 21st century, the world's strategic and economic center of gravity will be the Asia-Pacific.

She says events elsewhere, such as a war in Iraq and the start of a transition in Afghanistan, have lined up in a way that helps makes the focus on the Asia-Pacific possible.
